About Dykes on Bikes® Melbourne

Dykes on Bikes® Melbourne Inc (DoBM) is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit motorcycle club, incorporated in July 2011, under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act (VIC).

Our membership includes LBTQIA+ folx who identify as a woman, or as non-binary or genderqueer, and whose gender is aligned to womanhood or female identity, and who are attracted to the same.

Raising funds to benefit LGBTQIA+ communities across Victoria is a key focus, and through that we’ve been able to make donations to Rainbow Door, Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG), Koorie Pride Victoria, Thorne Harbour Health, WayOut Program, Midsumma Pride March, Bent TV, Star Observer, and The Australian Queer Archives (formerly the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives Inc).

Who we are and what we do

Dykes on Bikes® Melbourne Inc was formed on 25th June 2011. We are a chapter of San Francisco Dykes on Bikes® Women’s Motorcycle Contingent (SFDOBWMC) receiving approval of our affiliation in August 2011.

You will find us every year at the front of Midsumma Pride March in St Kilda and the ChillOut Festival in Daylesford.

DoBM Inc members also travel to Sydney each year to lead the yellow contingent in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

We’ve had members travel to participate in Brisbane Pride March, Adelaide Pride March, Rainbow on the Plains in Hay NSW, San Francisco Pride March, San Francisco Dyke March, San Francisco Trans March, San Diego Pride March, Brooklyn Pride March and Brighton UK Pride March.

We currently have around 70 members throughout Victoria, including greater Melbourne, Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula, Gippsland, the Wimmera and the Central Highlands.

Our herstory saw us start as a lesbian only motorcyle club in San Francisco in 1976, but now we proudly welcome LBTQIA+ folx who identify as a woman, or as non-binary or genderqueer, and whose gender is aligned to womanhood or female identity, and who are attracted to the same.

Our members represent all ages, abilities and nationalities. Dykes on Bikes Melbourne is a safe space for all of us.

All types of bikes and scooters are welcome and all skill levels of riders.

Whether you ride a scooter or a chopper, you are welcome to ride with us. No one gets left behind!

You don’t even have to ride to become a member! We encourage and support members who wish to gain their motorcycle licence through our Linda Gardiner Scholarship fund.

FUNDRAISING

Fundraising is a major part of our club's purpose.

In 2021 (postponed to 2022) Dykes on Bikes® Melbourne celebrated their 10th year as a club with the Dykes on Bikes Melbourne 10 Year Anniversary Night. The event raised over $7,000 for Koorie Pride Victoria.

Our charitable history

Our annual Pillions for Pride raffle started in 2015 and we have donated the proceeds to Midsumma, JOY94.9, Way out, Minus18 and ALGA (Australian Lesbian and gay Archives). We have also donated to Pride March Victoria, Bent TV and Star Observer.

During our inaugural year we donated money to RSPCA Victoria, The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Melbourne and The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne.

Since then we have supported and continue to support many charity rides including the annual Geelong and Melbourne Pink Ribbon Rides, White Ribbon ride, Brown Ribbon Ride, BACA – 100 mile ride, Black Dog Ride and various Toy Runs around Victoria. In 2013 we hosted a poker run in the Bendigo area raising money for the Black Dog Institute and Righteous Pups Australia.

If you would like to support DoBM's effort in what we champion, please donate.
